This Outdoor Lounger Takes Its Shape From a Surprising Source

Japanese industrial designer Kensaku Oshiro, an alum of Lissoni Associati and Barber Osgerby who founded his own Milan-based practice eight years ago, looked to an interesting inspiration source for Grapy: jute bags that farmers use as impromptu lounges during the workday. Despite its somewhat casual look, the beanbag-style outdoor seat is the byproduct of intensive research into ergonomics, softly supporting the body via polystyrene and foam padding. Grapy’s removable technical-fabric cover comes in Marquetry by Sunbrella or Meltemi Texture by Jover Decó, in five hues.

Pigment Penetrates These Ultra-Thin Porcelain Tiles

Inspired by the chroma-centric work of artists Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett, Milan-based architect Ferruccio Laviani created Pigmenti: ultra-thin porcelain tiles that leverage Lea Ceramiche’s Slimtech process. A layered application of pigment creates depth while the supremely matte surface accentuates the hue. “Color itself is like a material that penetrates the slab, becoming an integral part of it,” Laviani explains. The tile’s 3.5 mm thickness suits it to a wide array of applications—from interior and exterior wall cladding to furniture. Pigmenti is available in 12 colors and five sizes up to 40 by 118 inches.

BZIPPY Introduces Tables, Planters, and Vases With a Twist

In 2008, Bari Ziperstein, a CalArts MFA graduate who studied under well-regarded conceptual artist Michael Asher, founded her ceramic housewares company producing handbuilt slab-based and extruded ceramic objects. They were an instant hit.

Her latest endeavor for the BZIPPY brand is Ruffle: side tables plus planters and vases resembling fluted decorative pillars or ruffled sleeves. They can be glazed in any hue from her palette of options, from creamy Marshmallow to bright Sorbet Pink. The newest finish is Birch, a brown speckled glaze on a white ground.

Liz Lambert’s New Outdoor Textiles Serve Up Southwestern Style

Taking notes from her houses in Marfa, Texas, and Todos Santos, Mexico, on the Baja California peninsula, niche hotelier and El Cosmico proprietor Liz Lambert filled her Far West collection of outdoor textiles with colorful sarape stripes and soft textures. The series, Lambert explains, was inspired by a synthesis of many influences: “a lifetime of traveling throughout the Southwest, saddle blankets, colorful heavy Baja hoodies popularized by hippies and surfers in the ’70s, the finely woven serapes worn by vaqueros that we interpreted for robes early in my hotel career, Peruvian and Bolivian textiles, and fabrics I’ve collected over the years.”

Of course, the textile offerings—including Tejas Stripe, Campo Stripe, Baja Stripe, and Roadrunner Stripe, plus flatwoven rug Playa Stripe—are all made of Perennials’ tough 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic that’s fade-, mildew-, and UV-resistant as well as bleach-cleanable, with a performance finish molecularly bonded to the fibers for long-lasting protection.

Balmaceda’s Latest Collection is Full of Heart

Balmaceda, the rug company led by chief designer Jose María Balmaceda is rooted in Mexico City—and inspired by artisans from India and Nepal. The workshop’s emphasis on craft and thoughtful reinterpretations of tradition guides its latest collection, Corazones, sparked by the chambers of the human heart, the symbolic location of a person’s soul. That concept translates into unique rugs including Mercedes and Luz that evoke patchwork forms and hand-drawn maps, with colors that collide and edges that defy expectations. Completely customizable, the made-to-order rugs are hand-knotted of wool, bamboo silk, linen, and/or matka silk. Available in the U.S. through the Future Perfect.

Papuk Introduces an Elevated Cat Tree

Syrian-Canadian designer Vazken Karageozian founded Papuk (the brand’s name is Armenian for “fluffy”) to create feline-friendly elements that suit contemporary interiors; “striving for inter-species happiness,” is the Toronto company’s tagline. Its inaugural product, Connect, is a modular, personalizable cat tree pairing solid-ash dowels with ash-veneered plywood shelves—a decided departure from the usual bulky structures cat moms and dads typically live with. You can attached an upholstered cushion for a soft perch via leather straps, as well as a dangling toy that’s affixable to any top corner. The cat, of course, goes whenever it pleases.

Radnor’s ‘Crafted by Nature’ Exhibit Spotlights Complex Materiality

It was a big spring for Radnor company founder Susan Clark, who celebrated new gallery programming at her showroom on Manhattan’s Upper East Side with the curated show “Crafted by Nature.” The exhibition spotlighted a bevy of one-off and extremely limited-edition products by various makers—including Clark herself. She wielded her design prowess to full effect in manifesting a unique coffee table carved from a solid core of Italian Siena marble in a manner that makes it appear at once luminous and substantial: A monolithic slab top is held aloft by a textured base bearing the imprint of drilling marks. She used the same marble to craft a limited-edition series of three smaller curve-base side tables. The pieces, collectively dubbed Core, highlight the complexity of Mother Earth’s materiality, and the technical expertise required to design and fabricate such deceptively simple forms.
